Concept Ideation in VR

VR SKETCHING

VR sketching is the process of creating 3D sketches, drawings, and models within a virtual
reality environment. It allows designers and artists to use VR hardware and software to
conceptualize their ideas in a more immersive and intuitive way compared to traditional 2D
sketching or 3D modeling on a computer.

The course facilitates the Concept Ideation phase of
the design process and expedites the prototyping
design process.
Throughout this course, a student will discover how
to apply VR sketching to real-world design
challenges and create prototypes for products,
environments, and more.

Develop your creative skills and gain a competitive
edge in the rapidly evolving fields of design and
technology.

Explore the workflow for exporting your VR
sketches and refining them in professional 3D
modeling software.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE

Learning Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Prepare for Future Careers: Develop a strong foundation in VR sketching and 3D design that can be applied to various industries and career paths.

Understand the Basics: Navigate the Gravity Sketch interface, utilize tools and features effectively, and understand basic 3D modeling concepts.

Sketch in 3D: Master fundamental sketching techniques in VR, including line work, shape creation, and manipulating objects in three-dimensional space.

Build 3D Models: Create basic 3D models using a variety of techniques, such as extrusion, revolution, and sculpting.

Apply Design Principles: Demonstrate an understanding of basic design principles like proportion, balance, and composition within their VR sketches.

Collaborate: Share and critique their VR sketches with peers, gaining feedback and enhancing their communication skills.

Structure of course

Week 1: Foundation Course and Introduction to the course.
Week 2: Fundamental Sketching and getting started with gravity sketch.
Week 3: 3D Modeling Basics (extrusion, revolution, introduction to sculpting)
Week 4: Building Upon the Basics & Applying Design Principles
Week 5: Introduction to Materials and Textures
Week 6: Project Work (students develop a 3D model of their choice)

Development

This phase involves creating the actual learning materials, tools, and
activities based on the design blueprint. This phase could include:

VR Content Creation:

  1. Develop VR tutorials and practice environments for students to learn.
  2. Pre-recorded video instructions for each software tool.
  3. Practice templates for students to manipulate and modify in their
    VR space.

1.Sketching

Initial concepts were visualized directly
in 3D space, enabling design explora
tion and real-time iteration of ideas.

2. Surface

The shoe’s form and proportions were
refined to balance aesthetics and function
al design.

3. Texture

Realistic materials and textures were
applied to bring the design to life, allowing
for an accurate representation of the final
product.
